The chairman of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee has criticised the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate the election of a new state comptroller, declaring that the court cannot sit in judgement over parliamentary procedures. Speaking to Israeli media, the lawmaker stated that the court lacks authority over internal Knesset matters, marking a significant escalation in tensions between Israel’s judiciary and legislature.
The dispute centres on the Knesset’s choice of a new comptroller, a position that serves as an independent watchdog overseeing government spending and administration. The Supreme Court’s intervention in the electoral process has prompted fierce pushback from coalition members, who argue that such decisions fall squarely within parliamentary jurisdiction.
Despite pressure to rush through legislation before a potential Knesset dissolution, the committee chairman dismissed opposition concerns as “hysteria”, suggesting that the government intends to proceed with its preferred candidate regardless of judicial objections. The clash reflects deepening divisions over the proper balance of power between Israel’s branches of government.
