Donald Trump has accused Iran of being the root cause of Middle Eastern tensions, claiming the country attempted to harm American leaders including himself. Speaking at a NATO summit on Wednesday, the former US president alleged that Tehran had launched missiles at ships belonging to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Trump’s comments reflect longstanding US concerns about Iranian regional activities and its ballistic missile programme. Relations between Washington and Tehran have been strained for years, particularly following the 2018 US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal under Trump’s administration.
The remarks come as tensions remain elevated in the Middle East, with various regional actors engaged in proxy conflicts and missile exchanges. Trump’s assertion that Iran specifically targeted American leaders adds to rhetoric that has characterised Tehran as a destabilising force across the region.
The NATO summit provided the platform for Trump to outline his views on Middle Eastern security challenges and the role of American leadership in countering what he describes as Iranian aggression.
