A tanker has reported hearing two explosions whilst passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO). The incident occurred approximately 9 nautical miles south-east of Khasab in Oman on Thursday. The vessel’s crew and other nearby ships remain safe, with no environmental damage reported following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the explosions remain unclear at this stage. The reports add to ongoing concerns about maritime security in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, through which roughly one-third of global seaborne traded oil passes daily.
