The United Kingdom announced sweeping sanctions against Israeli settlements on Tuesday, with Foreign Secretary David Miliband accusing Israel of carrying out ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. The UK stated it “refuses to be a bystander” to the situation, marking a significant escalation in international criticism of Israeli settlement policy.
The sanctions were coordinated with France and Canada, alongside 12 additional countries that have backed restrictions on settlements. This represents one of the strongest multilateral diplomatic actions against Israeli settlement activities to date.
Miliband’s characterisation of Israeli actions as ethnic cleansing represents an unprecedented level of formal accusation from a major Western ally, reflecting deepening international divisions over Israeli settlement expansion and West Bank policies.
