The Houthis have been identified attempting to weaponise artificial intelligence in their military development programmes, according to cybersecurity firm Anthropic. The group sought to use Anthropic’s Claude AI model to develop advanced weapon systems, including guided rocket technology.
Anthropic detected users in northern Yemen attempting to leverage the AI platform for weapons development. According to the company’s findings, the Houthis conducted at least one failed test of a guided rocket as part of these efforts.
Security experts analyse this as part of a broader Houthi strategy to reduce their dependency on weapons supplies from Iran. The attempted weaponisation of AI represents an escalation in the group’s technical capabilities and reflects broader concerns about how advanced AI systems could be misused by non-state actors in weapons development programmes.
