The Israeli Defence Force has rejected testimonies presented in a documentary titled ‘NAZA’ which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, addressing allegations that artificial intelligence systems were used to autonomously select and execute targets in Gaza operations.

The IDF statement explicitly denied claims made in the film, asserting that ‘selection and approval of Gaza strikes [is] done by human personnel only… not by artificial intelligence.’ The documentary, made by Israeli filmmakers, received an ovation at its Venice debut, drawing international attention to questions about the use of AI in military decision-making.

The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about autonomous weapon systems and civilian protection in military operations. The IDF’s response emphasises human oversight in all targeting decisions, though the documentary’s allegations suggest potential discrepancies between official policy and operational practice.
