Iran-backed Houthi rebels have launched a significant offensive along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, capturing key positions including the strategic location of al-Mocha. According to reports from Ynet and Times of Israel, the advance occurred over a 48-hour period with waves of fighters and weaponry deployed to the area.

The offensive raises serious concerns about the Bab al-Mandab strait, a critical global shipping choke point. Analysts note the Houthis are now in a strong position to expand control further, though the immediate risk profile to Saudi and Israeli shipping has not fundamentally changed according to some assessments.

The advance comes amid reports that Yemeni government officials claim they requested US aerial support, which failed to materialise. A Yemeni legitimate government source told Ynet: ‘They launched waves of fighters and weapons, we turned to the US which promised aerial support from Saudi Arabia was on the way – but it never arrived.’

The strategic significance lies in the Houthis’ potential to further disrupt maritime traffic through one of the world’s most important shipping routes without requiring advanced weaponry to attack vessels in the strait.
