The Israeli Defence Force has permanently dismissed a senior commander who served as the intelligence officer of the Gaza Division on 7 October, according to multiple reports from Ynet and Walla. The dismissal follows an investigation into intelligence failures and operational shortcomings in the period leading up to the Hamas attack.
The officer, a lieutenant colonel, had previously petitioned against his initial removal and lost that appeal. According to IDF statements, he was among the commanders bearing command responsibility for the failures on that day. The officer retains the right to appeal the dismissal to the Chief of Staff.
This marks a significant accountability measure by the IDF regarding the security and intelligence failures that preceded the 7 October 2023 attack, one of the most significant incidents in Israeli military history.
