Criminals have deliberately set fire to the electrical room at a sewage treatment plant operated by Neveh Midbar water authority, causing a significant environmental emergency. The arson has knocked the facility offline, forcing all sewage from Nahal Hebron to flow towards Beersheba until repairs are completed.
The water authority has refused to pay protection money to the criminals responsible, and this is not the first time the facility has experienced extortion-related incidents. The CEO stated that the perpetrators are sophisticated operators who, when apprehended, are released and return to exact revenge on the organisation.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges at critical infrastructure facilities in Israel, with organised crime targeting essential services through extortion and sabotage. The sewage diversion poses potential public health and environmental risks to the Beersheba region.
