The Israeli military conducted an airstrike in southern Gaza and eliminated Maher Walid Amir al-Hacheni, commander of the Nuhba unit of Hamas’s military wing, according to an announcement by the organisation’s spokesman on Friday. Al-Hacheni participated in the assault on Kibbutz Re’im during the 7 October attacks.
The targeted killing represents a significant blow to Hamas’s military capabilities. In recent months, al-Hacheni had been overseeing terror operations against Israeli forces and civilians whilst simultaneously working to rebuild Hamas’s military infrastructure following extensive Israeli operations.
This strike forms part of Israel’s broader campaign against senior Hamas operatives and represents continued pressure on the militant organisation’s command structure.
