Bereaved father confronts Israeli Transport Minister over daughter’s death

A man whose daughter was killed during the October 7th attacks confronted Israel’s Transport Minister Miri Regev at a campaign event in Jerusalem’s Machane Yehuda market on Tuesday. Nissim Luek, the father of two, shouted at the minister as she campaigned ahead of the Likud party primary elections, telling her: “My daughter was murdered because of you — keep smiling.”

Regev, who was visiting the popular market for campaign purposes, continued to pose for photographs with supporters despite the emotional confrontation. She then entered her campaign vehicle and departed the scene, while Luek remained outside engaged in heated exchanges with her supporters.

The encounter highlighted the deep divisions within Israeli society over government accountability for security failures. During the altercation, one of Regev’s supporters accused Luek of financing Hamas, a counter-accusation that reflects the polarised political atmosphere surrounding Israel’s military response to the October 7th attacks.

The incident underscores the emotional toll of the conflict on bereaved families and their continued efforts to hold senior government figures accountable for what they view as policy failures that contributed to the deaths of their relatives.
