Border police officers returned fire after being attacked by assailants at a checkpoint near the Kalandia crossing in the West Bank on Tuesday. According to police statements, the attackers approached the gate at the crossing and, when asked to identify themselves, exited their vehicle and assaulted the officers with fists and choking holds whilst attempting to seize their weapons. One of the border police officers discharged his firearm towards the attackers’ lower body in response. Two people sustained minor injuries in the incident. The Kalandia crossing, located between Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah, is one of the main Palestinian entry points and has been a flashpoint for tensions in recent years.
