Israel’s Democratic Party is preparing to make sweeping demands as a condition for joining any future coalition government, according to conditions drawn up by party member Knesset member Galed Karib. At the top of the agenda is the replacement of the controversial Nationality Law with a new Basic Law enshrining Israel’s identity as both a Jewish and democratic state. The party is also seeking to impose term limits on the prime minister and introduce clearer legislation surrounding the offence of breach of trust—a charge that has featured prominently in recent Israeli politics. The Democrats are expected to use their potential kingmaker position in coalition negotiations to push for significant constitutional reforms, marking a significant hardening of their negotiating stance compared to previous government formations.
