Four childhood friends graduate as Israel Air Force pilots as women close gender gap in aviation

Two female Israeli Air Force pilots completed their flying course today, bringing the proportion of women successfully graduating from pilot training to 16.6 per cent—just one percentage point below the male success rate. Deputy Lieutenant A and Deputy Lieutenant G will receive their wings at a formal ceremony, marking a notable achievement in a field traditionally dominated by men. In a remarkable coincidence, four childhood friends from Modiin will also be commissioned today. The quartet, who attended school together, have been assigned to different squadrons as combat navigators and transport navigators, having completed their own training programmes. The group invited their former teachers to attend the graduation ceremony, underscoring the personal significance of their achievement and the role their education played in preparing them for military service. The simultaneous graduation of the two female pilots and their four male classmates highlights the diverse pathways available within Israeli military aviation and the ongoing integration of women into previously male-dominated specialisms.
