Hezbollah leader claims ceasefire deal will accelerate Israeli withdrawal

Naim Qassem, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, declared on Tuesday that the implementation of a ceasefire agreement memorandum will hasten Israel’s military withdrawal from Lebanon. Speaking to the Lebanese public, Qassem asserted that none of these developments would have been possible without the militant group’s sustained resistance during the recent conflict.

Qassem’s remarks suggest Hezbollah’s interpretation of the ceasefire terms as a strategic victory. The Lebanese Shia organisation has positioned itself as having forced Israeli concessions through its military operations, which sparked a major escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah earlier this year.

In his statement, Qassem also referenced Iran’s role in the standoff, claiming that the Islamic Republic has emerged victorious from the confrontation. He suggested that the question of who prevailed in the conflict has now been settled in favour of the Iran-aligned alliance, effectively declaring the dispute resolved in their favour. The remarks reflect how different parties to the conflict are framing the ceasefire agreement’s significance and their own roles within it.
