The Israeli Defence Force has initiated a comprehensive operation to retrieve weapons, ammunition and military equipment that were improperly removed by regular and reserve soldiers. The operation aims to address security concerns and prevent unauthorised possession of military hardware.
According to the IDF announcement, within the first three days of the operation, 34 firearms, approximately 30,000 bullets and 250 grenades have been recovered. The military has established around 65 collection points and centres across IDF bases to facilitate the return of equipment.
The recovery process is being conducted without requiring soldiers to provide identification or face legal prosecution, encouraging voluntary compliance. The operation was prompted partly by the recent theft of a military hammer from a base, which was subsequently recovered in a Negev kibbutz.
The IDF’s use of the phrase “no one wants a neighbour with a grenade” emphasises the security risks posed by improperly secured weapons in civilian areas. This systematic retrieval effort represents a significant security operation addressing weapons discipline within the military.
