Iran’s military chief claims Strait of Hormuz control as leverage in peace negotiations

Iran’s military commander has declared that Tehran views its control of the Strait of Hormuz as a crucial “geo-political asset” and bargaining chip in negotiations with the United States. Commander Amir Hatami stated that Iran would not relinquish its capabilities in the strategically vital waterway and would continue to rapidly rebuild both its offensive and defensive military capacities in the region. The statement underscores Iran’s determination to maintain its position of strength during any diplomatic discussions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-third of global seaborne traded oil passes, has long been considered one of its most significant strategic advantages. In recent days, Tehran had already signalled that it would not reopen the strait without first securing concessions that meet its stated conditions, making it clear the waterway remains central to any potential peace negotiations.
