Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has claimed he made clear to US Vice President JD Vance during recent negotiations that Tehran places no trust in Washington. Speaking on Friday during a meeting with Indonesia’s parliamentary leader, Qalibaf said he had emphasised Iran’s position in direct talks with the American official.
Qalibaf stated that while ending the war in the region should be a priority for all nations globally, Iran would not accept any settlement that amounted to capitulation. “The confrontation will never end in our surrender,” he said, suggesting that any diplomatic resolution must acknowledge Iranian interests and red lines.
The comments reflect deepening tensions between Tehran and Washington as negotiations continue over regional conflicts and Iran’s nuclear programme. They underscore Iran’s hardline position in talks, with Qalibaf signalling that despite diplomatic engagement, fundamental mistrust between the two countries remains a significant obstacle to any breakthrough.
Iran has long maintained a confrontational stance towards the United States, viewing American proposals with suspicion. Qalibaf’s public statement appears designed to signal to both domestic audiences and international partners that Iran will not be pressured into unfavourable agreements.
