Israel swelters as heatwave peaks at 45°C in Jordan Valley

Israel experienced extreme temperatures on Tuesday as a severe heatwave swept across the country, with mercury hitting 40°C across large swathes of the nation. In the Sea of Galilee region, temperatures reached 43°C, whilst the Jordan Valley endured even more intense heat, with readings climbing to 45°C. Despite the oppressive conditions, tens of thousands of visitors ventured out to natural reserves and parks throughout the day.
Meteorologists warn that the peak of the heatwave is expected to arrive on Wednesday, with conditions remaining dangerously hot before the first signs of relief arrive on Thursday. Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against heat-related illness, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and checking on elderly relatives and vulnerable neighbours. Emergency services have been placed on high alert for the remainder of the week as the extreme weather continues to affect the region.
