Israeli Defence Force (IDF) Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir conducted a field inspection in Gaza on Wednesday, meeting with Southern Command chief Yaniv Ashour and other senior military officers overseeing operations in the territory. The visit, which included commanders of the IDF’s 99th Division and Gaza Division, comes as Israel continues its military campaign following the October 7th attacks.
During his visit, Zamir stated that the IDF is systematically degrading Hamas’s capabilities in Gaza. “We have significantly weakened Hamas and changed the security picture,” he said, emphasising that the military would continue offensive operations while prioritising the defence of Israeli settlements and residents along the border.
The chief of staff’s comments underscore Israel’s continued military focus on eliminating threats to its territory. “We will not allow a threat to emerge on our borders as we experienced on October 7th,” Zamir said, referencing the surprise attack that killed over 1,000 Israelis and sparked the current conflict. The statement reflects the broader Israeli strategy of maintaining military initiative in Gaza whilst preventing future attacks.
The inspection signals the IDF leadership’s ongoing engagement with field commanders as operations in Gaza continue. Senior officers briefed Zamir on tactical developments and the current state of military operations across different sectors of the enclave.
