An Israeli police officer has been placed under house arrest following a shooting incident at Kalandia checkpoint in the West Bank earlier this week. During the incident on Tuesday morning, Border Police (Magav) officers opened fire, injuring two security guards at the checkpoint. The Police Internal Investigations Department (mach’ash) launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
Investigators have gathered testimony from those involved in the incident and interrogated the officer suspected of firing the shots. Based on their preliminary findings, a judge ordered the officer to be remanded in full house arrest for three days. Additionally, he has been suspended from all police stations for a period of ten days pending the outcome of the investigation.
The shooting at Kalandia checkpoint, one of the main Palestinian crossing points into the West Bank, has raised questions about the rules of engagement and incident protocols at military and police checkpoints in occupied territory. The investigation is expected to determine whether the use of force was justified under the circumstances.
