Israeli UN Ambassador Hits Back at New York Mayor Over Netanyahu Arrest Threat

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon has sharply criticised New York City Mayor Eric Adams after the mayor suggested he would enforce international law to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city for the UN General Assembly. Danon dismissed the proposal as politically motivated grandstanding, saying: “If anyone should be stopped, it should be Mayor Eric Adams himself.”

The diplomatic spat centres on whether Netanyahu could face arrest under the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction if he travels to New York. Adams had indicated he would comply with any ICC arrest warrant, a move that has drawn criticism from Israeli officials who view it as an unprecedented act of political interference.

Danon accused Adams of neglecting his mayoral duties in favour of what he called “incitement and generating headlines through attacks on the State of Israel.” The ambassador suggested the mayor should focus instead on addressing what he described as a rising tide of antisemitism in New York City. The comments reflect heightened tensions between Israel and some US cities over responses to the Israel-Gaza conflict and international legal mechanisms that could affect Israeli officials.
