Israel’s Supreme Court overturns ban on Arab parties ahead of elections

Israel’s Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the Central Elections Committee lacked sufficient grounds to disqualify the Balad party and Joint List from running in upcoming parliamentary elections. The court found that while statements and actions by Balad chairman Sami Abou Shahadeh were serious, they did not meet the threshold for disqualification. However, two judges dissented on Kasif’s eligibility, citing support for armed struggle against Israel. Abou Shahadeh subsequently withdrew his candidacy, calling it his most difficult political decision.
