Israel’s war echoes across the globe as diaspora Jews face rising antisemitism

As Israel continues its military operations in response to security threats, Jewish communities worldwide are grappling with an unprecedented surge in antisemitic attacks and harassment. The conflict has transcended geographical boundaries, creating a parallel struggle for Jewish and Zionist communities in Europe, North America, and other regions where Jews maintain significant populations.

From university campuses to city streets, Jewish diaspora communities report alarming increases in antisemitic incidents, including physical assaults, vandalism of synagogues and Jewish institutions, and coordinated online harassment campaigns. Many describe the current climate as the most hostile environment they have experienced in decades, with some comparing it to historical periods of Jewish persecution.

The situation has forced diaspora Jewish organisations to pivot their focus beyond traditional community services towards security measures and advocacy efforts. Jewish leaders are simultaneously working to combat misinformation about Israeli actions whilst defending their communities’ right to support Israel without facing discrimination or violence.

Community representatives emphasise that criticism of Israeli government policies should not translate into attacks on Jewish citizens in other countries, arguing that conflating Israeli political decisions with Jewish identity worldwide represents a fundamental form of discrimination. The broader concern, they contend, is that the current period has emboldened openly antisemitic rhetoric in mainstream political discourse and on social media platforms globally.
