Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has stated that the continued Israeli occupation is preventing the deployment of Lebanese armed forces in the country’s territory. Speaking on Monday, Aoun suggested that the ongoing Israeli presence undermines both Lebanon’s objectives and those of Washington, which has been mediating efforts to stabilise the situation.
Aoun indicated that negotiations with Israel now represent the only viable option remaining, following what he characterised as the failure of military action to achieve its intended goals. He expressed concern that despite these diplomatic efforts, some factions are attempting to reignite sectarian divisions within Lebanon.
The comments come amid ongoing tensions between Lebanon and Israel, particularly in border regions, and reflect Beirut’s efforts to balance security concerns with diplomatic solutions. Aoun’s remarks underscore the Lebanese government’s position that Israeli withdrawal is a precondition for stabilising the country’s security situation and preventing renewed internal conflict.
