Lieberman attacks Democratic Party chair as Netanyahu’s puppet in coalition row

Israel Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman has launched a scathing attack on Democratic Party chairman Yair Golan, accusing him of serving as a mouthpiece for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political machine. Speaking to the Knesset Channel, Lieberman said he would not agree to join a government in which the Democratic Party received control of the Defence, Internal Security or Justice portfolios.

Lieberman escalated his criticism by claiming that Golan spends his time “evacuating entire settlements” and directing blame towards him, suggesting the Democratic Party leader functions as “the Likud’s propaganda bureau.” The barb reflects deepening tensions between potential coalition partners as negotiations continue over ministerial positions.

Golan was quick to respond, telling Lieberman to “stop serving Netanyahu’s incitement campaign,” suggesting that the Israel Beiteinu leader is himself being manipulated by the Prime Minister rather than acting independently. The exchange highlights the fractious nature of current coalition talks, with multiple right-wing and centrist parties jostling for influence and key ministerial posts.

These disputes over portfolio allocation remain a significant obstacle to finalising a governing coalition, with security and justice portfolios particularly sought-after positions that carry considerable political weight and control over sensitive state functions.
