Palestinian villages brace for settler violence after deadly incident

Palestinian communities across the West Bank are preparing for waves of retaliation following a deadly incident last Friday that has heightened tensions in the region. Residents report expecting organised attacks, with some areas already experiencing nighttime raids involving large groups of men armed with petrol bombs and stones.

According to the head of the Jith village council, recent attacks have involved groups of over 100 people arriving on foot and in convoys, hurling incendiary devices and rocks at Palestinian homes. “They came on foot, in a convoy, perhaps more than 100 of them, throwing petrol bombs and stones,” he explained, describing the coordinated nature of the assaults.

Ibrahim, a resident from the nearby town of Sair, characterised the raids as a deliberate provocation tactic. “The tours are a way to provoke us,” he said, referring to what Palestinians describe as settler tours through their communities. “They enter the village, and if you say anything, they beat you.” This pattern of intimidation has left residents feeling trapped between silence and the risk of violence.

With formal security measures limited, Palestinian villagers have been forced to take defensive measures into their own hands. Communities are organising nightly watch patrols and fortifying homes to protect against anticipated attacks. The situation reflects what residents describe as a predictable cycle of provocation and retaliation that has become a recurring reality in West Bank communities.
