Rare summer downpour brings flash flood warnings to Jerusalem and Dead Sea region

Heavy rainfall swept across central Israel on Tuesday afternoon, with significant precipitation recorded over Jerusalem, the Ma’ale Adumim settlement, and areas in the north. The unexpected mid-summer storm has prompted authorities to issue flood warnings for the Judean Desert and Dead Sea regions, where sudden downpours can trigger dangerous flash floods in vulnerable areas.

The severe weather conditions forced authorities to close Achziv Beach, located on Israel’s northern Mediterranean coast, to swimmers. Officials cited hazardous sea conditions and a genuine risk to public safety, warning of “real danger to life” for anyone entering the water during the storm.

The unseasonable rainfall marks a striking departure from typical summer weather patterns in Israel, where dry conditions are the norm from May through September. Such unexpected precipitation can pose particular dangers in arid regions like the Judean Desert and around the Dead Sea, where the ground’s inability to absorb water quickly can lead to rapid accumulation and dangerous flooding in wadis and low-lying areas.

Meteorologists are monitoring the system as it continues to develop, with residents in affected areas advised to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding until conditions improve.
