The Pensioners’ Front Line: Reserve Unit with Average Age of 50 Takes Combat Position

A unique Israeli Defence Force reserve battalion is redefining what it means to serve in the military. The unit, known as “Etzmun”, is predominantly composed of former paratroopers and Golani Brigade veterans, many well into their fifties, who are now manning defensive positions in the West Bank. The soldiers deliberately prioritise holding the line rather than conducting offensive operations, a strategic decision that allows younger, more mobile units to focus on active combat missions.

The composition of the unit reflects Israel’s broader reliance on reserve forces to sustain military operations across multiple fronts. Most of Etzmun’s fighters are drawn from elite units such as the paratroopers and Golani Brigade, bringing decades of accumulated combat experience to their defensive posts. This concentration of seasoned veterans in a single formation creates a unit with an unusually high average age of around 50 years old.

According to those serving in the battalion, their primary mission is straightforward: defence. By holding defensive positions in Judea and Samaria, the unit enables regular infantry and other reserve battalions to redeploy from garrison duties to offensive operations. This operational model allows the Israeli military to maintain territorial security whilst concentrating its offensive capabilities elsewhere. The soldiers interviewed emphasised their commitment to their role, with one stating simply: “Our objective is to protect.”

The deployment highlights how Israel’s reserve system has become integral to sustaining long-term military operations. Rather than cycling through younger conscripts for every position, the military has found strategic value in maintaining veteran reservists in holding positions, preserving more combat-capable units for dynamic operations.
