Trump hails ‘historic’ defence pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan

Former US President Donald Trump has expressed enthusiasm for a newly signed defence agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, describing it as a turning point for regional stability. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated he was “very pleased” to see the three nations finally commit to a joint defence arrangement for Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.

Trump characterised the agreement as evidence of Middle Eastern unity and suggested it would strengthen the region’s ability to defend itself independently. “This demonstrates how the Middle East is coming together, and how countries can finally protect themselves in a much more meaningful way,” he wrote.

The former president praised the leadership of all three nations involved, calling the agreement “a great, bold and important first step”. The pact represents a rare convergence of interests between the three Muslim-majority nations, each of which has played significant roles in Middle Eastern geopolitics in recent years.

The defence arrangement is notable given the complex relationships between the three signatories, particularly between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which have had strained relations. Pakistan, meanwhile, has long maintained military and security partnerships across the region. The agreement appears focused on protecting Islam’s most sacred site, which lies within Saudi Arabia’s borders.
