Israeli officials believe the Trump administration will go to considerable lengths to prevent a full-scale resumption of conflict in the Middle East, according to assessments from Jerusalem. However, experts suggest the Iranian response to any American diplomatic efforts remains the key unknown variable that could derail efforts to contain escalation in the region.
The reassessment comes as Israel’s security establishment continues to grapple with regional tensions following the 2023 Hamas attacks that originated from Gaza. At the time, Israel’s Shin Bet security service had recommended to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he impose restrictions on Palestinian workers entering Israeli territory as a security measure. Netanyahu rejected the recommendation, leading his office to issue a statement accusing critics of “distorting the truth” regarding his security decision-making.
Meanwhile, within Netanyahu’s coalition, there are hopes that a potential merger between the Gantz-Shmotrich faction and the Arduan-Adelstein grouping could strengthen the prime minister’s political position and secure his parliamentary majority. Coalition allies believe such a consolidation would effectively guarantee Netanyahu’s political survival during the current period of uncertainty.
