Persistent uncertainty emanating from the White House about whether military action against Iran will proceed is pushing Israel’s security establishment to the brink, officials have indicated. After President Trump threatened a major strike against Iran only to defer it once again, Israeli defence chiefs are struggling to maintain operational readiness, with one senior security official stating: “The complexity is manageable, but Iran remains the priority.” The repeated signals coming from Washington—veering between threats and restraint—have created significant planning challenges for the Israel Defence Forces.

The uncertainty is particularly acute because Israel must maintain multiple contingency plans simultaneously, straining military resources and creating what officials describe as “difficulties in allocating missions across different theatres.” Military planners are uncertain whether to commit personnel and assets to potential Iranian operations or maintain their current focus on other security challenges. This strategic ambiguity has forced the IDF to keep forces in a heightened state of readiness, which is resource-intensive and unsustainable over prolonged periods.

A senior Israeli defence official warned that the constant shifting of US policy makes it difficult to coordinate with American counterparts and to brief political leadership on realistic timelines and operational feasibility. The Israeli government had previously prepared for coordinated action with Washington but has been forced to adopt a “wait-and-see” posture. Officials acknowledge that while managing the current situation remains viable, any further extensions of this uncertain period could begin to degrade operational effectiveness and force difficult choices about resource allocation across multiple regional security threats.
