A UN Watch investigation has challenged UNESCO’s condemnation of seven individuals killed by the Israeli Defence Force in Gaza, arguing they were militants rather than journalists as the UN body claimed. According to the report, which cites Israeli military statements and announcements from terrorist organisations operating in Gaza, all seven individuals held operational roles within armed groups rather than working for media outlets. UNESCO, the UN’s science, culture and education agency, had issued statements mourning what it described as journalist deaths. The report calls on UNESCO to correct its official records to reflect the individuals’ actual affiliations and roles. UN Watch, which monitors UN activity, based its findings on public statements from the IDF and the organisations themselves, suggesting the initial UNESCO characterisations were made without sufficient verification of the deceased’s actual occupations and affiliations.
