US and Saudi Arabia pressuring Oman over Strait of Hormuz plan, Iran claims

The United States and Saudi Arabia are attempting to pressure Oman into supporting what Iran has described as “unrealistic plans” concerning the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior Iranian official. The claims were reported by Reuters on Wednesday, with the Iranian figure alleging that Washington and Riyadh are seeking to use Oman’s diplomatic influence to advance their agenda in the region.

Oman, which sits at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, maintains a traditionally neutral stance in regional affairs and has historically served as a mediator between Iran and Western powers. The strait represents one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global energy supplies, with roughly a third of all seaborne traded oil passing through its waters.

The allegations come amid broader tensions in the Persian Gulf, where the US and its allies have sought to strengthen maritime security arrangements and counter what they view as Iranian threats to shipping lanes. Iran, however, has consistently opposed what it characterises as external interference in Gulf affairs, arguing that regional security matters should be resolved by Gulf states themselves.
