US and Saudi Arabia strike Iranian-backed militia targets in Iraq

United States Central Command announced on Wednesday that American and Saudi forces have conducted strikes against weapons and logistics facilities used by Iran-backed militias in eastern Iraq. The operations were carried out in response to more than 30 drone attacks launched by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards against US military personnel and Saudi energy infrastructure, according to the military statement.

The coordinated strikes represent an escalation in regional tensions, as Iran-backed militia groups have intensified their drone campaign against American forces stationed across Iraq and Syria, as well as critical energy facilities in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. The US military has previously warned that such attacks risk destabilising the wider Gulf region and threatening international energy supplies.

The United States has issued a fresh warning that additional military action will follow if the attacks continue. American officials have repeatedly stated that they retain the right to defend their forces and respond to threats posed by Iranian-backed groups, which have been designated as terrorist organisations by Washington. The strikes underscore the ongoing proxy conflict between the US and Iran, which has accelerated since Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.
