The United States State Department has confirmed that it monitored China conducting a test of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile fired from a submarine. According to the American statement, the Chinese missile landed in the southern Pacific Ocean.
The test represents another development in China’s military capabilities, particularly its submarine-based nuclear deterrent systems. Such tests are part of regular military exercises that countries with advanced missile programmes conduct to maintain and validate their strategic defence systems.
The confirmation by the State Department indicates that US surveillance capabilities continue to track significant military activity in the region. The test firing from a submerged platform, known as a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), is considered a key component of any nation’s strategic nuclear arsenal, as submarines provide a mobile and difficult-to-detect platform for potential retaliation.
The unarmed nature of the test suggests it was a routine capability assessment rather than a threat, though such military exercises are closely monitored by the international community, particularly by the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region.
