The wait is finally over – WWE 2K26, the official annual simulation game of professional wrestling giant WWE, has officially been released = and this year it feels more alive than ever.
First, full disclosure, I've been playing wrestling games for about as long as I've been watching the product on TV, back in the days of METV without cable and satellite. I've seen the best (Here Comes the Pain), and I've suffered with the worst (2K20). But there's no doubt that in recent years something good has been happening to the product, which each year also adds better-than-life features and significantly improves the experience, important fight types, and most importantly, improves the sense of freedom that the player gets to create their own personal WWE world.
Let's start with the main changes to the gameplay. You won't feel too many changes from last year, which is a good thing. But there are improvements that make the battles more authentic and thought-out. What's more, the AI has improved significantly and is much more responsive and thoughtful.
And for dessert, my favorite addition: three stages of hell, in which each round is held under different rules (for example: regular match, ladder match, cage match, and so on).
CM PUNK
The second mode that lets you create a character and take them on a journey is MyRISE, which has undergone its biggest overhaul since the mod launched this year, focusing on a much more personal and cinematic narrative. This year, the mode is divided into two completely separate experiences (the men's path and the women's path), allowing players to build their legacy in different ways. Despite the massive improvement in replayability with the story changes, the option to roam freely and feel the atmosphere is still missing.
Another mode that returns with improvements, though not massive changes, is the GM mode, where you can be the "boss" of each brand. This year you can run 50-week seasons, use more battle types (including inter-gender battles), and draft much deeper (more on that later).
The last mode we touched on is Universe Mode, the famous brown box that gives you complete control over everything: the schedules, the roster, the rivalries, everything. So unfortunately we didn't get new videos for the rivalries, and we didn't get rivalries of 3 or more people. But we did get an expansion of the promos, including a post-fight interview which isn't bad at all. The highlight of Universe is the draft – which breathes a bit of new life into the concept. But we still need more content otherwise this mode will die soon.
Now, before finishing, we have to touch on the big elephant in the room, and it's called RINGSIDE PASS. In fact, the game, like many others, has switched to a season mode instead of a direct DLC download. This means that every few games we will accumulate enough XP and be able to unlock a character or another prize. If we are in Premium, we will receive an equal character for free and we will receive one of the prizes that we would have received in previous years by playing in different modes (like Hogan from the 90s or an old championship belt). This year everything is in the Ring Pass, so if the character you want is high above Tier 40, there are two options: play until you collect enough XP to reach 40, or pay more extra to get what you already paid extra for. I personally will wait until the end of the season, to see how much really new content we received, to decide whether this transition helps players save and get more or not.
In conclusion, and if we put aside the issue of DLC, the game is not just another roster update. WWE 2k26 has made a significant leap in terms of player freedom. Whether you want to manage the organization behind the scenes, recreate history with CM Punk, or simply throw opponents into a trash can – the game gives you all the tools to create your own story with almost no limits.
