Hamas announced today that it is withdrawing from direct governance of Gaza, dismantling its governmental oversight committee and transferring administrative responsibilities to a newly established national management body. The Islamist organisation confirmed that all preparations have been completed for the transition of authority over the Strip, whilst dissolving its emergency governmental committee that had been operating in the territory.
The move represents a significant shift in Hamas’s institutional structure in Gaza, where the group has maintained administrative control since 2007. By transferring governance functions to a broader national committee, Hamas appears to be reshaping how it operates in the enclave, potentially distancing itself from direct responsibility for day-to-day administration.
The announcement comes at a time of considerable pressure on Gaza’s institutions following months of conflict. The reorganisation suggests Hamas leadership believes a restructured governance model may be more resilient to international pressure and better suited to current circumstances in the territory.
