A former senior officer in the IDF is convinced: "We will have to launch an extensive operation in northern Samaria"

After the attack in which the late Meir Tamri was murdered in northern Samaria, which joins a wave of terrorist attacks since the beginning of the year, today (Wednesday) Lt. Col. (ret.) Yaron Buskila, Secretary General of the Security Forces, estimated that the IDF will have to make a decision to withdraw for an extensive operation in northern Samaria to eradicate terrorism." In a conversation with Yoav Mintz on Radio North 104.5FM he explained that "in Northern Samaria there are terrorist infrastructures that are being built against the background of a vacuum created there, so when the terrorist organizations are growing there – there is no reason for there to be fewer attacks."

"Prepared for a war we haven't experienced in years": What is behind the IDF's huge exercise?

Regarding the serious attack in northern Samaria, he said: "We are talking about shooting a passing vehicle – one of the more common attacks in northern Samaria, which greatly helps the perpetrators to escape and usually hide for days or weeks. This is again an attack in the middle of the day where it is very easy for a terrorist to escape, when he is in an environment where there is no A lot of army forces, there are no checkpoints and he fled to the nearby village and from there he disappeared. Unfortunately, northern Samaria, as we have already talked about here quite a bit, is saturated with terrorists, terrorist organizations that have grown and grown, and we are still carrying out special activities there, with the characteristics of one or two terrorists or late operations After an attack, and we didn't go in to do activities against all the terrorist infrastructures."

Referring to the level of frequency of such attacks, he explained: "Most of the shooting attacks are from a passing vehicle and less static, as we just recently saw the shooting towards Gan Ner and Kibbutz Merav on the Gilboa. Most of the attacks from a vehicle are carried out at bus stops or collection centers for the public."

You are very familiar with IOSH, can you map the roads where there is a higher or lower probability of vehicle attacks, place roadblocks to reduce shooting attacks?
"It's terribly difficult. A shooting attack makes it possible to escape and is therefore possible from anywhere. But we are talking about attacks that are mostly carried out in northern Samaria and as far as the areas without an IDF presence, most of the attacks originate from there. That's why we see most of the attacks at the Toph and North intersection. It is easier to escape to the Jenin, Tulkarm and Nablus areas in places where the IDF presence is less and there are fewer settlements, because where there is a settlement there is also an army, more than other places."

This means that there is less IDF presence in northern Samaria than in other places such as Ramallah and Hebron.
"That's right because of the lack of settlement. I heard a military commentator who linked this event to the event of the establishment of Chumash. He is the only one who linked it. The GAP (Islamic Jihad) organization took responsibility for this event and he was talking about the events in Gaza in general and not about Chumash. The settlement in this matter is not the problem, it is the solution, because as I said wherever there is a settlement there is also an army. This is one of the conditions for operational control in the field."

Is there a fear that attacks of the type that happened yesterday may multiply in the near future?
"Unfortunately, I don't think they will increase, but I also don't think they will decrease. In northern Samaria, there are terrorist infrastructures that are being built against the background of a vacuum created there. Not the Palestinian Authority, without a permanent IDF presence. When you go on sale, you go in and out, but not a permanent presence. Therefore, when the terrorist organizations are growing there, there is no reason for there to be fewer attacks. Their whole goal is to harm the IDF and they are concentrating part of their effort on pushing the Palestinian Authority, which is a means but the goal is to fight Israel."

He concluded his remarks by saying that "in the end, the IDF will have to make the decision to embark, together with the political echelon of course, on a broad operation in northern Samaria, in order to change the reality. Like you said, this story is getting harder. It is not impossible that the more we postpone the end, we will also see terrorist attacks inside the Green Line and in the city centers of the State of Israel until we eradicate them. I remind you that the "Protective Wall" operation started only after the severe attack on the "Park" hotel. Not that there weren't other attacks, but until there was such a large attack – there was no operation. I hope we won't have to experience or absorb such a big event in order to make a decision to deal with terrorism."
