The end of the epidemic? The corona virus is no longer a global emergency, the World Health Organization announced today (Friday). The move comes a little more than three years since the outbreak of the epidemic, which led to the death of more than seven million people.

"The emergency committee met yesterday for the 15th time, and advised me to declare the end of the state of emergency, I accepted this advice," said the organization's CEO, Batedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The virus was declared by the committee in January 2020 as representing the highest level of alert. This helped in international attention, as well as strengthening cooperation on vaccines and other treatments.
The organization clarified that the virus will continue to exist, but that, as mentioned, it no longer represents an emergency as it has been for a long time since the outbreak of the epidemic. According to the organization's data, the death rate as a result of the virus has dropped significantly, from a peak of more than 100,000 people a week in January 2021, to about 3,500 a week.
