We are constantly talking about the importance of our daily protein intake for building muscles, hair and the immune system . But they did not check whether normal protein consumption over many years is also related to aging processes and diseases in older age.
In a study published in the current February issue of the American Journal of Scientific Nutrition, over 48,000 people were followed for more than 20 years. Of these, 7% (about 3000 people) matched their definitions of healthy old age , better physical fitness and also better mental ability.
The characteristic of these people was a good protein intake over the years – and not only that – more vegetable protein intake. The researchers' conclusion was that consuming vegetable protein can improve health in old age and affect the aging process, and the researchers' recommendation was to replace part of the carbohydrates consumed and even part of the animal protein consumed – with vegetable protein.
