The most serious affair revealed in Assuta's fertilization units came to light in 2022, when it was found that an embryo that was returned to the uterus of a patient at Assuta Rishon LeZion did not belong to her genetically. Following the affair, investigations, genetic tests, and lengthy legal proceedings were conducted around the question of the identity of the biological parents of the baby that was born. Additional incidents related to identification and treatment deficiencies in the fertilization units were subsequently revealed.
The Ministry of Health noted that the new committee is being established in response to the findings of the review committees and the procedures that have already been held on the subject in recent years, but emphasized that the new information received requires a further broad examination of the units' conduct over time. The committee was asked to submit its conclusions by September 15, 2026.
Assuta said: "This is a continuation of the examination, which the Ministry of Health announced over six months ago. As in all examination procedures that have taken place since the embryo incident, Assuta operates transparently and cooperates fully with the ministry, and will do so now as well. Since the incident, Assuta has implemented many improvements, some of them among the first in the country, and has even successfully withstood the Ministry of Health's inspections and surprise inspections carried out in the units."
