The Haiku Stairs, which are located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, and are one of the favorite attractions for tourists and photographers, will be closed starting at the end of the month.
The Haiku Stairs consist of 3,922 steps that wind their way through a mountain trail at Kanaha in East Oahu. The picturesque staircase, which leads to a spectacular observation point, was destroyed due to tourist traffic in the area despite the prohibitions and warnings.
The Haiku Stairs, known to travelers as the "Stairway to Heaven", will be removed starting at the end of April, according to a statement issued by the Honolulu city government. In a press release he issued, Mayor Rick Blancardi wrote: "I can assure you that this was not a capricious decision."
Although the famous steps, built during World War II by the Americans, have been closed to the public since the late 1980s, the age of social networks has meant that many Instagrammers and influencers have come to them.
In fact now, the stairs will be removed according to a decision made already in 2021. Broadly speaking, the reason for their removal is an attempt to prioritize public safety and prevent disruptions in the lives of residents in the area.
