The UK has announced sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, with Foreign Secretary David Miliband confirming he proceeded despite appeals from the Chief Rabbi, Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council to delay the action.

US officials told Axios that President Trump was informed in advance by British PM Burnham before the sanctions announcement and did not attempt to dissuade him. American officials also conveyed to London that they “share concerns about Netanyahu government policy in the West Bank,” signalling transatlantic alignment on the issue.

Chief Rabbi Mirvis condemned the move as “a dark day for Britain’s Jews,” stating the sanctions do not advance peace and may have contrary effects. Miliband defended his decision as necessary despite the domestic Jewish community opposition.
