Cargo ship struck near Omani port in latest Red Sea incident

A cargo vessel has been damaged near the port of Al Khysaab in Oman, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre. The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles north-east of the port on Tuesday. The ship reported via VHF Channel 16 that it had been struck by either a projectile or an unidentified flying object.

The UKMTO, Britain’s maritime trade coordination authority, issued the alert following the vessel’s distress call. The nature and origin of the object that struck the cargo ship remain unclear at this stage, though such incidents in the region have become increasingly common in recent months.

The attack marks the latest in a series of maritime incidents affecting commercial shipping in waters off the Arabian Peninsula. The area has seen heightened tensions, with various incidents attributed to different actors operating in the Red Sea and Gulf of Oman. Vessel operators and shipping companies have been advised to exercise heightened caution when transiting through the region.
