The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 1,708, authorities announced on Wednesday morning. The surge marks a concerning escalation in the ongoing outbreak, which has claimed 580 lives since it reignited.
The epidemic continues to pose a significant public health challenge across the region, with healthcare systems struggling to cope with the rising number of patients requiring isolation and treatment. Ebola, one of the world’s most deadly viruses, spreads through direct contact with blood or body fluids of infected individuals and can be fatal in up to 90 per cent of cases.
Congolese health officials are working to contain the spread through enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns. International health organisations have been providing support to the country’s medical infrastructure as the outbreak develops.
The death toll of 580 represents a significant mortality rate among confirmed cases, underscoring the severity of the current health emergency in Congo and the critical need for sustained intervention efforts.
