The death toll from two earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to 2,645, according to an announcement from the country’s information ministry on Friday. The South American nation has been grappling with the aftermath of the twin seismic events, which have caused widespread devastation across affected regions.
Beyond the confirmed deaths, the ministry reported that more than 12,000 people have been injured in the disaster, with the true scale of human suffering continuing to emerge as rescue operations progress. The earthquakes have also left approximately 15,000 people homeless, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in a country already facing significant economic and social challenges.
Venezuela’s emergency services have been mobilised to assist survivors and coordinate relief efforts, though the task remains enormous given the scale of displacement and injury. The twin earthquakes represent one of the most devastating natural disasters to strike the country in recent years.
