Donkey with rabies found dead at Golan Heights settlement

Israel’s Health Ministry has confirmed that a donkey infected with rabies died on 31 July at a farm in Maale Gamla, a settlement in the Golan Heights region. The discovery was announced on Tuesday morning. Four people who came into contact with the infected animal have already begun receiving post-exposure prophylaxis treatment to prevent rabies infection. Rabies is a serious viral disease transmitted through saliva, typically via bites or scratches from infected animals. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal, making preventive treatment crucial for anyone exposed to potentially infected creatures. The Health Ministry has not yet specified the exact circumstances of how residents came into contact with the donkey or whether additional precautions are being taken in the settlement.
