Ebola cases in Democratic Republic of Congo surpass 2,900

The confirmed death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached alarming levels, with nearly 3,000 cases now documented. According to government figures released over the weekend, confirmed cases of the virus have climbed to 2,973, of which 1,309 have been fatal. This represents a significant escalation in what has become one of the world’s most serious ongoing health crises. The mortality rate of approximately 44 per cent underscores the severity of the outbreak, which has been particularly devastating in the eastern regions of the country. The DRC has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past decade, but the current epidemic remains one of the deadliest on record outside of the 2014-2016 West African crisis that killed over 11,000 people. Health authorities continue efforts to contain the virus through vaccination campaigns and improved infection control measures, though accessing affected areas has proved challenging due to ongoing conflict and security concerns in the region.
