Thousands of port workers across France, Italy, Spain, Greece and other European countries staged a major strike in protest against the transport of weapons through their ports, which they claim are being used in the war in Gaza. The coordinated industrial action represents one of Europe’s largest protests against arms shipments related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The chairman of the workers’ committee at Piraeus port stated: “We do not want weapons passing through our port that serve to kill people.” The strike has had immediate economic consequences, disrupting shipping operations across multiple major European ports.
This represents a significant escalation in European civil society action against arms transfers and reflects growing public opposition to weapons shipments in connection with the Gaza conflict, with labour unions now taking direct industrial action.
